Anyone unfamiliar with the Flaming Lips’ work prior to the dreamy “Soft Bulletin” a decade ago may find the band’s latest offering a little unsettling. “Embryonic” — out Tuesday — dispenses with the lush orchestrations and upbeat vibe. This is one dark, brooding album.
It’s also very good. And frankly, I’m ready for a change. It’s not quite a return to the band’s late ’80s beginnings. The psychedelic guitar bombast is replaced with electronic special effects. Still, it’s loose and more rock. Recommended.
